The First House (Tanu Bhava) in Vedic Astrology

Everything begins here: the rising sign at your birth becomes the first house — the body you live in and the lens you look through.

The first house — Tanu Bhava, the house of the body — is where the chart itself begins. The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth (the Lagna) becomes this house, and every other house follows from it. It is both a Kendra and a Trikona, the only house that is both, which is why the classics call it the strongest of the twelve.

The first house is the 'I' of the chart: your constitution, appearance, temperament and the instinctive way you meet the world.

A strong first house in daily life

When the first house and its lord are strong, you can see it before the person speaks: sound health, presence, a settled sense of self. Life has a clear axis — decisions come from the inside out, recovery from illness or setback is quick, and the personality makes a consistent impression wherever it goes.

A strained first house in daily life

A strained first house tends to show as a wobble in vitality or identity — health that needs frequent tending, self-image that depends on the last person's opinion, or a life steered more by circumstance than by choice. Strengthening the Lagna lord, and the daily disciplines of body and routine, are the classical answers.

Which planets feel at home here?

Mercury and Jupiter each gain dig bala here — intellect and wisdom are strongest when they stand at the ascendant and become the personality itself. The Sun rises with dignity in the first, Mars gives a fighter's constitution, while the nodes here make the sense of self a lifelong, fascinating project. Any planet in the first house colours the whole chart, because it colours you.

How Dr. Nidhi reads the first house

Dr. Nidhi begins every reading here: the Lagna and its lord set the frame, and only then is the Moon brought in — because how you feel (Moon) moves through the body and temperament (Lagna) you were given. The running dasha then tells which part of that story is switched on right now.

Frequently asked questions

The first house (Tanu Bhava) is the self — body, appearance, vitality, temperament and the overall direction of life. It is formed by your rising sign (Lagna), which is why an accurate birth time matters so much: it fixes this house and every house after it.
Because it is the only house that is both a Kendra (angle) and a Trikona (trine) — the two most powerful house groups in Jyotish. Its lord, the Lagnesh, is treated as a key planet for the whole chart.
Mercury and Jupiter gain directional strength (dig bala) at the ascendant, and a dignified Sun or Mars gives presence and a strong constitution. Any planet here shapes the personality directly, for better or worse, according to its own condition.
