The Houses of the Birth Chart

Twelve houses, twelve arenas of life — from the body you woke up in to the peace you hope to end with. Meet each bhava: its meaning, how it feels when strong or strained, and the planets most at home there.

Start with the overview

For the map before the territory, read The 12 Houses — overview. Your own houses are set by your rising sign — find your Lagna with the free Discover Yourself tool, or see the whole picture in a Kundli Reading.

Frequently asked questions

The twelve bhavas divide the chart into life's twelve arenas — self, wealth, courage, home, children, health, marriage, transformation, fortune, career, gains and release. Every planet acts through the house it occupies and the houses it rules.
The Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the chart's pillars and the Trikonas (1, 5, 9) its houses of fortune; planets linking them create classical Raj Yogas. The 6th, 8th and 12th are the demanding dusthanas — challenging, but carrying their own gifts.
Your rising sign (Lagna) fixes the houses, so you need your birth date, exact time and place. The free Discover Yourself tool finds your Lagna, and a full reading maps every planet to its house and what that means for you.
