Charity (Daan) as Remedy

The remedy that costs and therefore counts — giving as a planetary practice.

What is this remedy?

Daan is prescribed giving: each graha has traditional gifts (Saturn's oil and black til, the Sun's wheat and jaggery, the Moon's rice and white cloth) given on its weekday to those in genuine need.

Why it is traditionally used

The logic is elegant: a strained planet often marks a tight fist somewhere in life — fear of loss, hunger for control. Giving that planet's substance, regularly and personally, practises the opposite. Daan is non-attachment with a receipt.

When it is used

Daan is the great all-rounder — prescribed alongside nearly every other remedy, and often alone for Saturn, Rahu and Ketu matters where pacification suits better than amplification. Weekly rhythm on the graha's day is the classic form.

How it is practised

Simply and personally: the right substance, the right day, given hand-to-hand where possible to someone who genuinely needs it — or to kitchens, shelters and gaushalas that do. Modest and weekly outperforms grand and once.

Who should consult before doing it

When you want the prescription matched — which planet, which substance, which day — and when daan is being done at someone (feeding grudges, not people). The reading names the graha; the giving does the rest.

Common mistakes

  • Giving discards and calling it daan — the substance should be worthy
  • Publicising the giving until it becomes about the giver
  • Donating to whoever asks loudest rather than who needs
  • One grand gesture in place of the weekly rhythm

A gentle note: remedies are shared here for education, in the spirit of tradition. They support reflection and steadiness; they are not a guarantee of outcomes and never a substitute for medical, legal, psychological or financial advice. Whether a particular remedy suits you is read from your full birth chart — please consult first.

Frequently asked questions

Regularity outranks quantity. A modest gift every Saturday for a Saturn season is classical practice; scale is entirely by capacity.
Yes — the substance list is traditional, not rigid. Money given to food, shelter or care in the graha's spirit serves; the personal, regular act is the active ingredient.
Each graha has its substances and day. A reading identifies the planet asking for the practice — after that the list is simple and we share it gladly.
